Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg has pledged that, if elected president, his administration would allocate $1 billion to combat anti-Semitism and violent extremism.

The Democratic candidate told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that his “administration will devote $1 billion to prevent and combat radicalization and violent extremism. We will empower law enforcement by increasing the FBI’s domestic counter-terrorism field staff and pass federal legislation to expand our ability to track hate.”

Moreover, he said, “to combat the violent extremism that continues metastasizing online, we will dedicate federal funding for technology innovation and training to improve the software tools that track extremism.”

Buttigieg expressed support for the Never Again Education Act,?bipartisan legislation that has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. If enacted, it would create a grant program at the U.S. Department of Education to enable teachers across the United States the resources and training necessary to teach students about the Holocaust and its lessons.

The candidate also pledged to increase funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which allows religious institutions and other nonprofits to protect themselves.

He said that he would “direct the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service, which works to strengthen the ability of communities to prevent and solve conflicts, to prioritize its efforts to combat anti-Semitism and reduce tensions in communities where anti-Semitic incidents occur.”

Finally, he vowed to “create an interagency task force that works on combating all forms of bigotry and hate, including rising anti-Semitism. This task force will coordinate and leverage the resources of the federal government to address anti-Semitism domestically.”

Netanyahu, Gantz to visit White House amid reports of Trump revealing Mideast peace plan-绵阳懦诘投资管理有限公司 http://www.gnnstore.com/netanyahu-gantz-to-visit-white-house-amid-reports-of-trump-revealing-mideast-peace-plan/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 22:20:22 +0000 http://www.gnnstore.com/?p=90511 Two major party leaders don’t “come to Washington just for a conversation,” which poses questions as to why an initiative would be released a month before the third round of Israeli elections, says Aaron David Miller, a former Mideast negotiator.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Blue and White Party and opposition leader Benny Gantz are scheduled to visit the White House next week for a development on the highly anticipated Mideast peace plan, which has been called the “deal of the century,” announced U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday while meeting with Netanyahu.

Pence said on the table to be discussed are “regional issues, as well as the prospect of peace here in the Holy Land.”

U.S. President Donald Trump further confirmed the visit on Twitter, saying he “looks forward to welcoming” the two Israeli party leaders. But he said that “reports about details and timing of our closely held peace plan are purely speculative.”

The proposal, which would reportedly be released before the Israeli elections on March 2, is purportedly “the most generous deal ever” for Israel, which could include Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley, and all settlements in Judea and Samaria, in addition to a demilitarized Palestinian state, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley told reporters on Thursday that he had no information “at this time.”

The Trump administration opposes Israeli annexation of the Jordan Valley ahead of the peace plan’s release, reported Israel’s Channel 13.

The Palestinian Authority, which has been officially boycotting the Trump administration, is expected to reject Trump’s latest peace plan even before conversations begin.

‘It won’t change the Palestinian position’

The long-awaited plan has been delayed numerous times due to the Israeli elections and other reasons. The economic component was released last June at a conference in Bahrain.

JNS previously reported that it would include recognizing a Palestinian state with its capital in remote parts of eastern Jerusalem. The Palestinians have claimed that sector of the city as the capital of a future state, a position supported by most countries. But Israel considers the entire city, including its eastern part, to be the Jewish state’s undivided capital.

Aaron David Miller, who advised on Mideast issues at the U.S. State Department for 25 years and serves a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told JNS there has been “no precedent” for a sitting prime minister and opposition leader meeting with a U.S. president, and that the reported trip indicates a concrete development is in store.

He said that two major party leaders don’t “come to Washington just for a conversation,” which poses questions as to why an initiative would be released a month before the third round of Israeli elections.

“Whatever the U.S. wants, it’s highly unlikely” that the Trump administration seeks for Netanyahu and Gantz to form a unity government, said Miller, “given Knesset arithmetic and Netanyahu’s indictment.”

“If this were a plan that would actually bring us closer to launching or relaunching negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, an argument could be made by Gantz and Netanyahu, and the Trump administration, that what is best right now with this historic opportunity at hand is to form a national unity government,” added Miller. “That’s not what’s going on here. You don’t have a Palestinian interlocutor, and you’re unlikely to have one.”

Yet if the United States were to be able to convince the Gulf states to have a meeting with Netanyahu as part of the peace plan, “that could change the political equation,” said Miller, adding that “it won’t change the Palestinian position.”

A bipartisan resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives will be introduced on Monday, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp.

It will be introduced by Reps. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.), Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), their offices announced on Thursday.

The resolution honors the 6 million Jews who were murdered by the Nazi regime and the millions of others whose lives were tragically cut short, many of them from minority groups.

The measure also reaffirms the United States’ shared commitment to combating anti-Semitism and all other forms of bigotry.

Additionally, it supports continued educational efforts to teach future generations about the Holocaust and pays tribute to Holocaust survivors who have shared their painful stories, which serve as a warning to future generations.

More than 80,000 Holocaust survivors still live in the United States.

“Nearly 75 years ago, Allied troops liberated Auschwitz and saw with their own eyes the Nazi regime’s evil and barbaric persecution of Jews and other minorities,”?said Meng. “Since then, the United States has resolved to teach future generations about the Holocaust, and why anti-Semitism and bigotry must be fought whenever and wherever these acts of hate occur.”

“I will never forget what I experienced during my visit to Auschwitz this week—the gas chambers, the crematorium, the hair and glasses and personal belongings that were taken from murdered Jews,” said Deutch, who is Jewish. “I walked through the gates where more than 1.1 million people perished, mostly European Jews. Many were subjected to torture, starvation, experimentation, and ultimately, mass execution in gas chambers.”

“We must give real and powerful meaning to ‘never again.’ Let us honor the Survivors and ensure their dignity in their remaining years, and work to make sure our children learn of the horrors of the Holocaust so it never happens again,” he continued. “We can also honor the memories of all who were murdered by standing united against anti-Semitism and fighting hatred in all of its forms.”

Zeldin, also Jewish, added, “Never again in any form can we allow this horribly unjust ending for the innocent lives of so many children, women and men. Thankfully, with the will and courage of our greatest generation and their service and sacrifice, ultimately, good triumphed over evil, but not before millions of lives were unfathomably cut short, tearing apart families, communities and nations. This resolution strongly reaffirms this important pledge and resolves to combat anti-Semitism in our modern world wherever and however it may rear its ugly head.”

The resolution is endorsed by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Jewish Federations of North America, Simon Wiesenthal Center, Union of Reform Judaism, Union of Orthodox Congregations of America, American Jewish Committee, Anti-Defamation League, HIAS, B’nai Brith International, National Council of Jewish Women, American Zionist Movement, Jewish Women International, MERCAZ USA, National Association of Jewish Legislators and Hadassah.

At present, more than 40 co-sponsors are supporting the resolution, most of them Democrats.

Similar resolution introduced in Senate

A similar resolution was introduced in the Senate on Thursday by Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.).

“‘Never again’ should be more than just words,”?said Cramer.?“Seventy-five years ago, good defeated evil, and commemorating that anniversary reminds us of what it costs when we refuse to combat the rising tide of anti-Semitism.”

“During the Holocaust, 6 million Jews and millions of other innocent individuals—Poles, Soviets, Romani, Serbs, Afro-Germans, Jehovah’s Witnesses, gay men and women, people with disabilities and countless others—were forced into concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and violently murdered,” said Rosen.

“We will never forget the suffering inflicted upon these individuals or on those who survived the horrors of the Holocaust. We honor this day, and the millions lost, by making a pledge that we will never allow an event like the Holocaust to occur again. ‘Never Again’ must mean ‘Never Again’ for anyone,” she continued. “From this dark past, we must band together to bring forth a brighter future, fighting anti-Semitism and hate in every form.”

Rosen, along with Cramer and Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), last year introduced the “Never Again Education Act” that, if enacted, would create a grant program at the U.S. Department of Education to enable teachers across the United States the resources and training necessary to teach students about the Holocaust and its lessons.

A similar version was introduced in the House.

IDF strengthens cyber-defense coordination with US Cyber Command-绵阳懦诘投资管理有限公司 http://www.gnnstore.com/idf-strengthens-cyber-defense-coordination-with-us-cyber-command/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 21:33:40 +0000 http://www.gnnstore.com/?p=90608 Seen as an outpost against global technological warfare, the IDF has also opened its simulator to visits by several foreign militaries.

The post IDF strengthens cyber-defense coordination with US Cyber Command appeared first on JNS.org.

The Israel Defense Forces and the U.S. military are strengthening their coordination and partnership in the area of cyber defenses.

Lt. Col. O (full name withheld), an officer in the IDF’s J6 and Cyber Defense Directorate, told JNS in recent days that a joint and relatively large exercise held with the U.S. military’s Cyber Command was highly successful.

Tens of Israeli cyber defenders from the Joint Cyber Defense Division, along with cyber defenders from the Intelligence Directorate, Israeli Air Force, Israeli Navy and its ground forces, flew to the United States in November for the drill—the fourth of its kind.

All of the Israeli personnel taking part have been trained by the IDF’s Joint Cyber Defense Division, irrespective of where in the military they are currently serving, noted the officer.

“We set out to simulate a number of scenarios that are relevant to both militaries. This is similar to the intimate, strategic ties in place between the U.S. and Israel across a wide number of areas. In the area of cyber cooperation, the same thing is taking place,” said Lt. Col. O.

Lt. Col. O (full name withheld), an officer in the IDF’s J6 and Cyber Defense Directorate. Source: IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

Prior to the exercise, dubbed “Cyber Dome,” the Israeli and American teams drew up an organized battle procedure, complete with defined and clear objectives. This enabled them to practice responses to a significant simulated cyber attack, in which adversaries try to cripple military operations.

Preparations for the exercise began more than six months before its start date and included a preliminary exercise in Israel. The recent exercise saw Israeli and American forces acting as a “joint organic defense team,” the IDF said at the time of the drill.

“The challenge in this kind of drill is to identify the scenario and objectives that serve the operational interests of both sides,” stated the officer. “The exercise enables both sides to learn and work together. It allowed each side to examine the concepts and working methods of the other.”

American-Israeli joint exercises include a range of military drilling, such as the major biannual air-defense series, known as Juniper Cobra. Such drills form the foundation of cooperation on areas of joint strategic interests, stressed the officer.

Asked to discuss the nature of the changing cyber threat posed by multiple adversaries, Lt. Col. O said that cyber attackers reflect the development of technology in the military world.

Just like civilians, he said, modern militaries understand that as soon as new capabilities are introduced, new risks also appear. “But no one can roll back modernization,” he said. “Therefore, we must make the required adaptations.”

He compared the evolution of the threat to the way households have gone from using cash only to relying full on digital banking services, despite the common awareness of ongoing cyber attacks on banks.

“People still put their money in banks and trust the system. In the defense reality, it is the same. We take calculated risks while living in a changing reality, based on the analysis of what we’d like to defend and what the adversaries’ capabilities are,” explained the officer.

‘The enemy will not attack directly’

In the world of cyber warfare, attackers have no geographic limitations and rarely launch attacks directly from their own location.

“One of the significant things in the cyber arena is that in 99.9 percent of cases, the enemy will not attack directly from one city center to another,” said Lt. Col. O.

In dealing with such threats, cyber defenders have multiple missions. One is to try and return the situation to what it was before the cyber attack was launched. Another is to identify and stop the cyber attack in its tracks before it can progress further.

Cooperation with other militaries can boost the ability of cyber defenders to achieve those goals.

The IDF is boosting cooperation with other militaries, as well in the realm of cyber defenses. In 2019, the Joint Cyber Defense Division opened its doors to foreign military delegations who were interested in visiting the division’s advanced cyber simulator.

Several countries took up the invitation and arrived in Israel for training, said the officer. “They see Israel as an outpost of cyber defense.”

The United States on Thursday sanctioned several companies and senior executives?allegedly part of the international network supporting Iran’s petrochemical and petroleum industries.

The four international petrochemical and petroleum companies have collectively transferred the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of exports from the National Iranian Oil Company, an entity instrumental in Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical industries, which helps to finance Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force and its terrorist proxies, said the U.S. Treasury Department in a statement.

“Iran’s petrochemical and petroleum sectors are primary sources of funding for the Iranian regime’s global terrorist activities and enable its persistent use of violence against its own people,” said U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Thursday’s action targets Triliance Petrochemical Co. Ltd., a Hong Kong-based broker with branches in Iran, United Arab Emirates, China and Germany.

In 2019, Triliance ordered the transfer of the equivalent of millions of dollars to NIOC as payment for Iranian petrochemicals, crude oil and petroleum products shipped to the United Arab Emirates and China after the expiration of any applicable significant reduction exceptions, according to the Treasury Department

In facilitating these shipments, Triliance worked to conceal the Iranian origin of these products and also facilitated the sale of millions of dollars’ worth of petroleum products involving Naftiran Intertrade Company, a subsidiary of NIOC, to companies in China, according to the department.

Additionally, Triliance Kish Petrochemical Company, which is the Iran-based branch of Triliance, recently changed its name and operates as Tiba Parsian Kish Petrochemical. It was also one of the entitles sanctioned on Jan. 23, along with Hong Kong-based Sage Energy HK Limited, Jiaxiang Industry Hong Kong, Ltd., Shandong Qiwangwa Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Shanghai-based Peakview Industry Co. Limited and Dubai-based Beneathco DMCC.

Triliance executive Ali Bayandarian and Shandong Qiwangwa executive Zhiqing Wang were also just sanctioned by the United States.

The actions exemplify the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran since withdrawing the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal in May 2018, reimposing sanctions lifted under it, along with enacting new financial penalties on the regime.

U.S. special representative for Iran Brian Hook said the successor to slain Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, who now heads the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, would suffer the same fate if he also killed Americans, he told the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper.

After the U.S. assassinated Soleimani in a drone strike on Jan. 3, Iran quickly appointed Ghaani as the new head of the Quds Force and he pledged to continue Soleimani’s course.

“If he follows a similar path of killing Americans, he will meet the same fate because the president has made clear for years that any attacks against American personnel or interests in the region will be met with a decisive response,” Hook said in the interview with the London-based Arab daily published on Thursday.

“And I think the regime now understands that they cannot attack America at will and expect to get away with it. So we will hold the regime and its proxies accountable for any attacks on Americans or on American interests in the region,” he added.

Hook also called on the U.N. Security Council to condemn the September attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

“There is a role for the U.N. Security Council to play, to condemn Iran for violating the sovereignty of Saudi Arabia. That was an unprovoked attack by the regime against Saudi Arabia on Sept. 14, and the council needs to condemn it,” said Hook.

The U.S. envoy said that “Iran is not able to get away with the kind of terrorist attacks that they used to. That doesn’t mean that we’ve eliminated Iran’s ability to conduct asymmetric attacks, but our new policy is making a difference.”

Several top world leaders addressed the Fifth World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Thursday in an event that commemorates 75 years since the 1945 liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.

Speaking at the Jan. 23 ceremony held at Yad Vashem were the leaders of the four Allied powers—U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Russian President Vladimir Putin of Russia, Britain’s Prince Charles and French President Emmanuel Macron—as well as Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“Israel is eternally grateful for the sacrifice made by the Allies. Without that sacrifice there would be no survivors today. But we also remember that some 80 years ago, when the Jewish people faced annihilation, the world turned its back on us,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“For many, Auschwitz is the ultimate symbol of evil. It is certainly that,” he said, adding that “but for the Jewish people, Auschwitz is more than the ultimate symbol of evil. It is also the ultimate symbol of Jewish powerlessness. It is the culmination of what can happen when our people have no voice, no land, no shield.”

“The Jewish people have learned the lessons of the Holocaust: to take, always to take seriously the threats of those who seek our destruction; to confront threats when they are small; and above all, even though we deeply, deeply appreciate the great support of our friends, to always have the power to defend ourselves by ourselves. We have learned that Israel must always remain the master of its fate,” said Netanyahu.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence speaks at the Fifth World Holocaust Forum held at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem on Jan. 23, 2020. Photo by Yonatan Sindel/Flash90.

In remarks to those gathered, Putin said his country mourns “all the victims of the Nazis, including 6 million Jews,” and that the death camps were “not just operated by Nazis, but by their henchmen in various countries,” in an apparent swipe at Poland and other eastern European nations. Polish President Andrzej Duda canceled his attendance at the commemoration after he was denied being able to speak at the event.

The Russian leader noted that the Soviet Union “paid the highest price, more than any other” during World War II, with 27 million killed, calling it the “price of victory.”

Putin also claimed that 40 percent of the Jewish Holocaust victims were Soviet citizens, a figure disputed by historians.

“We need to find the courage not just to speak about anti-Semitism, but also to do everything in our power to protect Jews,” he said.

‘A dark stain on human history’

Speaking after Putin, Pence cited U.S. President Donald Trump’s words, calling the Holocaust a “dark stain on human history.”

“Today, we remember what happens when the powerless cry for help and the powerful refuse to answer,” he said.

The vice president also recalled his visit to Auschwitz last year, saying that one cannot visit the site “without becoming over with emotion and grief.”

“One cannot see the piles of shoes, the gas chambers, the crematoriums, the lone box car facing the gates of the camp … without asking, ‘How could they?’ ” he said.

Pence also called on the world to unite against growing anti-Semitism, and notably called out Iran for its Holocaust denial and threats to wipe out Israel.

“Today, we remember what happens when the powerless cry for help and the powerful refuse to answer.”

“In that same spirit, we must also stand strong against the leading state purveyor of anti-Semitism. The one government in the world that denies the Holocaust as a matter of state policy and calls to wipe Israel off the map,” he said. “The world must stand strong against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

France’s Macron also spoke out against modern anti-Semitism, saying that despite all that has passed, “anti-Semitism and the scourge of anti-Semitism has returned, and with it, xenophobia and intolerance have also raised their ugly heads.”

“We will not allow ourselves to stand by in silence because we promise to remember and to take steps. Remember, never forget,” he emphasized.

In his address, Prince Charles spoke about his grandmother, Princess Alice, who is buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and helped to save a Jewish family during the Holocaust.

“My grandmother, who is buried on the mount of Olives, has a tree plated here at Yad Vashem and is counted as one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a fact that gives me and my family immense pride,” he said.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said as a German leader, he stands “laden with guilt” over the atrocities committed by his country.

He also expressed concern over rising anti-Semitism, noting the October 2019 attack on a synagogue in Halle, Germany.

“I wish I could say that we Germans have learnt from history once and for all, but I cannot say that when hatred is spreading, I cannot say that when anti-Semitism is hidden in criticism of Israeli policy,” continued? Frank-Walter Steinmeier, “and I cannot say that when only a thick wooden door prevents a right-wing terrorist from carrying out a massacre on Yom Kippur.”

The University of Montana’s president condemned a “hateful email” that was sent to some staff and faculty on Saturday ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day that promoted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about Jews.

“The email was an affront to our values, and what we as a community believe and seek to uphold,” wrote Seth Bodnar in an email to the “University of Montana family.”

“To all who received the email, we are saddened and diminished by this act of hatred, and we support you,” he continued. “We are investigating its origin and will take appropriate action.”

The email’s sender has not been identified. The message was received by at least 380 email accounts, the university’s chief information officer, Renae Scott, told the?Missoulian?on Tuesday.

The email reportedly consisted of an attached flier that included a link to the Nation of Islam’s book Jews Selling Blacks. Recipients were encouraged to print and distribute “a few hundred or thousand” copies of them.

The book falsely blames Jews for controlling the transatlantic slave trade.

The email also included a link to watch speeches by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who is known for anti-Semitic rhetoric and other bigoted statements, including calling Adolf Hitler a “very great man.”

Bodnar noted that “this is not the first time an email like this has been received on our campus, and it will not be the last. We will continue to receive them and each time, we will respond appropriately and in a timely manner. Be assured we will act swiftly and surely on behalf of our students, faculty and staff.”

“We believe in the freedom an education brings, but this freedom is only possible when we speak out against hate and continue the necessary work to be inclusive of all. We continue that work today on myriad fronts,” he continued. “The work of many on campus, including student groups, points toward a UM family that seeks to build a welcoming and inclusive campus for all. This is ongoing work that is, as the hateful email highlights, still necessary.”

French President Emmanuel Macron berated Israeli security personnel on Wednesday during a visit to Jerusalem’s Old City, after they pushed ahead of his own security detail to enter the Church of Saint Anne, which is French state property.

Speaking in English, Macron told the Israeli security team, “Everybody knows the rules. I don’t like what you did in front of me. Go out. Outside,” Reuters reported.

Amid the crush at the entrance to the church, the French president urged everyone to remain calm, saying, “Nobody has to provoke nobody. OK? We keep calm.” He thanked the Israeli security personnel, saying, “you did a great job in the city, I do appreciate that,” but added, “please respect the rules, as they are, for centuries. They will not change with me, I can tell you, okay? So everybody, respect the rules.”

The Israel Police and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) said in a joint statement that the French president’s security detail and the Israeli security team had discussed whether the Israelis could enter the church with him, the Times of Israel reported.

“In accordance with the security arrangements coordinated beforehand, the French president and his people were accompanied in the church by a policeman and a member of the Shin Bet,” the statement said, according to the report.

In 1996 a similar incident occurred with former French president Jacques Chirac, who also had a dispute with Israeli security at the same church.

During his visit to the Old City, Macron also stopped by the Western Wall. The French president is in Israel for the Fifth World Holocaust Forum, along with more than 40 other world leaders.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday called on France to recognize a Palestinian state within the pre-1967 lines with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Abbas made the request during a meeting with Macron in his Ramallah office.

“We are looking forward to France’s recognition of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital, as the only way to salvage the European-backed two-state solution. That will give hope to our people about the prospects of achieving peace and stability,” Abbas said, according to the report.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday assured the mother of Naama Issachar, an Israeli-American woman imprisoned in Russia whose family has been anxious to secure her release, that “everything will be fine.

At a press conference in Jerusalem shortly after a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Residence with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to which Naama’s mother Yaffa Issachar was also invited, Putin said, “I have met Naama’s mother. It’s clear to me that she is from a very good, honorable family. I know the position of the prime minister, who is asking me to make an appropriate decision. All this will certainly be taken into account when the final decision is made.”

The Russian president added that Issachar “is very worried, I can see that. I told her and I want to repeat it again: Everything will be fine.”

Naama Issachar, 27, was arrested by Russian authorities in April after a small amount of cannabis was found in her luggage during a layover in Moscow, and was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for drug trafficking.

It is widely believed that Issachar’s heavy sentence may have been designed to pressure Israel into not extraditing a known Russian cyber-criminal to the United States.

Putin is in Israel to attend the Fifth World Holocaust Forum. More than 40 other world leaders are also in Israel this week for the event, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, are U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Prince Charles of Great Britain, King Felipe VI of Spain, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In Israel for the Fifth World Holocaust Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Thursday for a ceremony to unveil a monument in the city’s Sacher Park commemorating the defenders and survivors of the German siege of Leningrad during World War II.

The Memorial Candle pillar stands almost 28 feet high, and was erected in remembrance of the estimated 600,000 to 1.5 million Russians who died during the Nazi siege, which lasted from Sept. 8, 1941 to Jan. 27, 1944.

The Jerusalem Municipality fast-tracked approval for the memorial in July, at a budget of $340,000, according to a report by Channel 12.

The ceremony comes just days before the annual Russian memorial day for the defenders of Leningrad, in which Russians turn off the lights in their homes and kindle memorial candles, and was also attended by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) Governor Alexander Beglov, President of the Russian Jewish Congress Yuri Kanner and Chairman of the Jewish National Fund Daniel Atar.

Report: Hamas officials lock horns over leader Haniyeh’s visit to Iran for Soleimani funeral-绵阳懦诘投资管理有限公司 http://www.gnnstore.com/report-hamas-officials-lock-horns-over-leader-haniyehs-iran-visit/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 12:18:04 +0000 http://www.gnnstore.com/?p=90456 Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s predecessor, Khaled Mashaal, was apparently seething over the appearance in Tehran for Gen. Qassem Soleimani’s funeral. calling it a “strategic mistake.”

The leadership of Hamas is at odds over Hamas political bureau head Ismail Haniyeh’s decision to travel to Tehran earlier this month to attend the funeral of Iranian Quds Force commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike at the Baghdad International Airport on Jan. 3.

The trip ruffled the feathers not only of Egypt, but also among several Salafist terrorist organizations in Gaza, which are now threatening retaliation against Hamas over the visit, and inside Hamas itself. According to a report in Independent Arabia—a joint project between the Saudi-based Media Arabia and British daily The Independent—Haniyeh’s predecessor Khaled Mashaal has leveled scathing criticism at Haniyeh over the move, which he labeled a “strategic mistake.”

Mashaal, who assumed Hamas’s leadership in 1996, resigned in 2017 and named Haniyeh as his successor alongside Yahya Sinwar, who was named the group’s military leader. Lately, however, he has been rumored to be eyeing a political comeback.

“The trip was a strategic mistake. Sending a small delegation to Soleimani’s funeral would have been enough,” said Mashaal, according to the report. Haniyeh had made a “rash decision,” said Mashaal, especially in light of Haniyeh’s promises to Cairo.

Egyptian authorities set conditions on Haniyeh before allowing him to leave Gaza, with which he pledged to comply. The conditions included a ban on travel to Iran or Lebanon and meetings with Iranian and senior Hezbollah officials.

Tensions with Egypt are so great that it remains unclear whether Egypt will allow Haniyeh, who is currently on a visit to Malaysia, to return to Gaza through its Rafah border crossing, according to the report.

The visit also stoked tensions with Jordan, which has refused a request by Haniyeh to travel to Amman over his visit to Tehran, and with Saudi Arabia—Iran’s chief adversary in the Persian Gulf.

Lebanon’s al-Akhbar newspaper, however, reported that Mashaal supported Haniyeh’s trip to Iran, claiming he had even contacted Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and Soleimani’s successor as Quds Force commander, Brig. Gen. Esmail Ghaani, to express his condolences.

The Lebanese daily also claimed that Hamas’s military wing also endorsed the visit, despite the tensions it may cause with the Salafist groups.

Senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump Jared Kushner and U.S. Special Representative for International Negotiations Avi Berkowitz will not attend the gathering of world leaders at the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem on Thursday due to bad weather.

The two were scheduled to arrive in Israel on Wednesday night straight from Davos, Switzerland, where they are taking part in the annual World Economic Forum alongside Trump.

But along with U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, they could not make it to the Zurich airport on time to catch the flight to Israel due to inclement weather; therefore, a decision was made to return to the United States with the president.

Israel Hayom has learned that the peace team is expected to make a visit to Israel in the near future to discuss the administration’s peace plan ahead of its release.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is set to arrive in Israel on Thursday, and he will be a keynote speaker at the Holocaust forum.

Bloomberg criticizes Trump’s withdrawal from Iran deal, despite opposition to it-绵阳懦诘投资管理有限公司 http://www.gnnstore.com/bloomberg-criticizes-trumps-withdrawal-from-iran-deal-despite-opposition-to-it/ Thu, 23 Jan 2020 01:19:16 +0000 http://www.gnnstore.com/?p=90377 “The U.S. withdrawal has allowed Iran to abandon its own obligations under the deal and has left the world with few tools to stop it,” according to a campaign spokesperson.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, said that while he opposed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he did not agree with U.S. President Donald Trump withdrawing America from it in May 2018, reported Jewish Telegraphic Agency on Wednesday.

In 2015, Bloomberg expressed “deep reservations” about the nuclear agreement.

“Mike was initially against the Iran deal, but thinks it was a mistake for President Trump to unilaterally walk away from it,” a Bloomberg campaign spokesman told JTA.

After exiting the agreement, the Trump administration reimposed sanctions lifted under it, along with enacting new financial penalties on Iran as part of its “maximum pressure campaign” on the regime.

“While the agreement was not perfect—it did not address Iran’s ballistic-missile program, and it gave the regime political cover to step up its aggression in the region—the U.S. had an obligation to keep its word once the agreement was in place,” said the spokesperson. “The U.S. withdrawal has allowed Iran to abandon its own obligations under the deal and has left the world with few tools to stop it.”

The spokesperson also said what Bloomberg would do about the issue if elected president.

“The first thing to do is re-establish the coalition that realized the danger of Iran marching toward a nuclear weapon. Collective pressure will be needed to change Iran’s behavior,” said the spokesperson. “This should be the starting point for the use of diplomacy. We should also be prepared to employ the leverage that sanctions have provided.

“Next, Iran must come back into compliance with the JCPOA requirements. That will require addressing the advances it is likely to make between now and next year—advances that could shrink its breakout time. After rejoining, in order for any new arrangement to be sustainable, we must also be ready to address other inadequacies in the deal, which include the need to extend fast-approaching sunset clauses, curtail Iran’s ballistic missiles, end its destabilizing regional activities and institute more intrusive monitoring.”

Democratic presidential candidates who have pledged to re-enter the United States in the Iran deal include Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.); Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.); Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.); former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii); former Rep. John Delaney (D-Md.); entrepreneur Andrew Yang; and billionaire Tom Steyer.
